sustainability

how we make a chew.

single-ingredient sourcing means fewer steps, fewer fillers, and a smaller footprint per chew. here's what that actually looks like end to end.

sourcing

USDA-only proteins

every protein in the navan lineup is sourced from USDA-inspected processors within the contiguous US. no imports. suppliers audited annually for animal welfare and food-safety practices. we publish the audit summary in our annual transparency report.

processing

slow-dehydration, low energy

we never extrude. slow-dehydration uses roughly 40% less energy per finished pound than extrusion and preserves the nutrient density and chew texture that does the dental work. single-ingredient also means no synthetic additives, binders, or flavor sprays.

packaging

recyclable, increasingly

outer mailers: 100% post-consumer recycled paperboard. inner bags: currently a multi-layer barrier film that's recyclable through TerraCycle's drop-off network. mono-material compostable bag is in pilot testing for the 3-month plan starting q4 2026.

shipping

carbon-offset across the board

every navan order ships carbon-offset through verified-emissions-reductions credits at no cost to you. we work with carbon removal projects in the US (forest restoration in oregon, soil sequestration in iowa) instead of broad portfolio offsets.

on the roadmap

what we're still working on.

honesty is part of the product. here's what we haven't solved yet.

  • compostable inner bag — in pilot for the 3-month plan, full rollout target q4 2026.
  • refill program — researching reusable outer canisters with mail-back inserts for subscribers.
  • annual transparency report — publishing supplier audit summary, carbon footprint per chew, and recycling rates starting january 2027.
  • sourcing radius — moving from 100% US-sourced to 80%+ regional (suppliers within 500 miles of our fulfillment center) by 2028.
